Remember

“Remember He is the artist and you are only the picture. You can’t see it. So quietly submit to be painted—i.e., keep fulfilling all the obvious duties of your station (you really know quite well enough what they are!), asking forgiveness for each failure and then leaving it alone. You are in the right way. Walk—don’t keep on looking at it.”

C. S. Lewis

I'm a writer and editor living in the lovely city of Hamilton, Ontario. By day, I write for World Renew, a relief and development agency; during evenings and weekends, I let short stories, essays, and other pieces out to play. I like to write about the intersection of faith, art, culture, and justice.

  1. Wise words from a wise man.

  2. Great quote, C.S. Lewis was a fantastic writer.

  3. Love, love, love this quote! Thank you for sharing this. All too often, I forget to look at the bigger picture. Oh, to have a mind like C.S. Lewis!

  4. Poignant! Thank you for this simple truth.

  5. That quote reminded me of this one, also from Lewis:
“Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of – throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.”

  6. Thanks for this, Adele! A good word, for sure.

  7. Looks like I’m not the only one who needed this beautiful reminder from sir Lewis the great. Glad to share it–and glad that it resonates so widely (but then, with Lewis that’s no surprise.) : )

  8. What a great quote. “Quietly submit to be painted…Walk don’t keep looking at it.” Definitely needed this today, too. Thanks for sharing it, Adele.

  9. Wonderful quote. One that I actually was not familiar with. It looks like you have a great blog here.

  10. Thank you for “Liking” my C.S. Lewis post yesterday. Your blog looks great!

  11. Not unlike another eminently quotable man, G.K. Chesterton, what Clive says has the ability to stick to one’s spiritual ribs and clean us out (maybe I should have chosen a better metaphor…)
